Fireworks cause Tamaqua explosion
An explosion early Saturday morning in Tamaqua has been linked to illegal fireworks.
Tamaqua Police and all four fire companies responded to a fire call at 129 Race St. at 1:29 a.m. Police arrived to find smoldering boxes in the street. The boxes had been on the rear porch at 124 Race St.
Persons unknown reportedly threw two firecrackers on the porch, causing two loud bangs and setting the boxes on fire. A neighbor, Chris Jandrisevitz, heard the explosions, came outside and quickly moved the burning boxes to the street, where they could cause no further damage.
Roxanne Counterman, a resident of 124 Race St., told officers she immediately went outside after the explosions, but was unable to see anyone in the area. She also noted some damage was done to her vehicle by the fireworks.
