Lehighton Borough Council last night tabled the awarding of a contract for garbage collection and disposal in the municipality to an independent contractor. Presently the borough has its own garbage truck, employees and dumping site.

Council members said they want to study the bids further before awarding the pact.

The borough council is considering hiring an outside firm for collection and disposal of trash because it anticipates closure of its sanitary landfill in the near future by the state Department of Environmental Resources.
