Berks man pleads to drunk driving

A Berks County man, scheduled to pick a jury on Monday in Carbon County court and face trial on a charge of driving under the influence, changed his mind and entered a guilty plea to the charge.

Louis A. Nawrocki, 49, of Mohnton, pleaded to one count of DUI with a second count dropped in a plea agreement.

He was arrested on July 8, 2012, by state police at Lehighton along SR209 during a sobriety checkpoint operation in Franklin Township. Nawrocki entered the checkpoint area and was found to be under the influence.

He submitted to a blood test at the scene which showed a .10BAC.

Judge Joseph J. Matika accepted the plea and deferred sentencing at Nawrocki's request. He asked for the opportunity to apply for placement in the county's Intermediate Punishment Program (IPP) with electronic monitoring. Matika said the placement would have to be approved by both the Carbon County Adult Probation Department and its counterpart in Berks County.

Sentencing was scheduled for Jan. 23, 2014.
