Crashes probed on I81 in Schuylkill

Two one vehicle crashes were probed along Interstate 81 in Schuylkill County over the weekend.

A crash was reported about 11:35 a.m. on Saturday along I81 in Butler Township, Schuylkill County.

State police at Frackville said Carolyn A. Babich, 69, of Fairfax, Va., was driving a 1981 Ford E350 van northbound in the left lane when the front driver's side tire blew out causing her to lose control.

Babich attempted to regain control but was unable as the truck went onto the berm with the front left driver's side hitting the guard rail on the west shoulder. After impact the truck continued about 500 feet while traveling north before Babich was able to bring it to a stop.

Babich was not injured but her passenger, Andreau Simpson, 71, Ashburn, Va., sustained a minor injury and was taken to the Schuylkill Medical Center-S. Jackson St., Pottsville.

The second crash occurred along the about 1:41 p.m. on Saturday. Troopers said David Ciani, 42, of Dunmore, Luzerne County, was driving a 2010 Suzuki SX4 northbound in Ryan Township when a deer entered the road in front of him. He was unable to avoid the animal and struck it with the front end. Ciani was not injured.
