Lehighton UVO invites community to Memorial Day services in Lehighton, Weissport

United Veterans Organization of Lehighton invites the community to attend Memorial Day services in Lehighton and Weissport on the morning of Memorial Day, May 27.

Veterans groups will be divided into two sections with services held in the Catholic Cemetery, Lehighton, and at Union Hill, Weissport, simultaneously at 9:45 a.m. and will also be conducted at the Sgt. Stanley Hoffman Boulevard Monument at 8:45 a.m. with a rifle salute at the Col. Weiss Monument at 8:55 a.m.

Memorial Day services will also be held at Blue Mountain Health System, Gnaden Huetten campus, at 9:05 a.m. and at the Lehighton Fireman's Monument at 9:15 a.m.

The Lehighton Division will form at the Lehighton Borough Annex on North Third Street. Veterans of this division and the Lehighton Band, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Brownies and Cub Scouts will meet there at 9:15 a.m.

The Lehighton Division will then proceed to the Catholic Cemetery for services, with the Rev. Michael E. Ahrenfield, M. Div., pastor of St. Peter and Paul R.C. Church, offering the invocation and benediction. Harry J. Wynn, III, American Legion Past Post Commander will be in charge of the service. The speaker will be Ronald Rabenold, fifth grade teacher/historian and Major General Marvin J. Barry, USAF Ret., 20th District VFW Patriot's Pen winners Kennedy Malsch and Mary Wilhelm will read their essays.

Following the service, the Lehighton Division will proceed to Mahoning Street via Third Street.

The Weissport Division, with the Lehighton Band, will form on Franklin Street at the Weissport Park at 9:30 a.m. They will salute the World War I and Ben Franklin monuments in the park and then proceed to the Union Hill Cemetery for services there. The speaker will be Stephen Ebbert, sixth grade teacher/USAF veteran. The invocation and benediction will be given by UVO Chaplain William H. Gross.

Each division will be headed by the UVO color guard, band, PAARNG firing squad, Veterans, and Boy and Girl Scouts.

Enroute to Third Street, a wreath will be tossed off the Weissport bridge to honor the dead at sea.

Both divisions will unite at the Third and Mahoning streets and proceed to the Lehighton Cemetery, where the final 2013 Memorial Day services will be held at 11 a.m. The main speaker will be 2nd Lt. Shawn K. Updegrove, PLT LDR DET1 131 TRANS Co.

The invocation and benediction will be given by UVO Chaplain John Stefanik. Wynn will be in charge of the service.

Greetings will be given by Honorable Mayor Donald Rehrig.

At the conclusion of the ceremony at the Lehighton Cemetery, the Lehighton UVO will parade on Alum Street to Third Street and continue to the American Legion Post Home. A brief flag-raising ceremony will be held along with a salute. Refreshments will be served after the ceremony, with participants and families invited to join the program and luncheon.
