Maureen Hoppes of Jim Thorpe couldn't believe what she saw when she came out of the Zoo Gym at the Carbon Plaza Mall in Mahoning Township on a recent afternoon. A swarm of bees took residency in the right rear quarter panel of her car. Beekeeper David Mattern of Cherryville was contacted. He came and calmly removed most of them. Mattern is a member of the Lehigh Valley Beekeepers Association and has been keeping bees for 32 years. He said that a queen decided to relocate and happened to pick that car, and the swarm followed. The bees he collected will go to an empty hive that he has at his home.
