Fair warning: Tamaqua bridge to close
DONALD R. SERFASS/TIMES NEWS Signs for motorists and pedestrians began popping up in Tamaqua on Monday, advising travelers that a main bridge on US209 will close. The closure will last up to 18 months.
Closure of the Tamaqua East Broad Street bridge, US 209, has been slightly postponed, but PennDOT issued fair warning to pedestrians and motorists on Monday that changes in travel patterns are two weeks away.
According to PennDOT, the detour route will go into effect and the bridge construction will begin on Tuesday, May 28.
Once construction begins, the bridge will be closed to all vehicle and pedestrian traffic for up to 18 months. The anticipated completion date is Nov. 21, 2014.
Temporary parking and traffic restrictions will be in place on various streets during construction. The bridge contractor will install signs on state and local roads advising drivers of these changes. Modifications will also be made to traffic signals at the intersections of Broad and Greenwood streets and Center and Cedar streets to accommodate changes in traffic patterns.
