Local woman celebrates 99 years

Published May 10. 2013 05:03PM

Elsie Rita, well known in her community, recently celebrated her 99th birthday.

She was born on March 13, 1914 in Lansford as Algisa De Marco to Assunta and Florindo De Marco. She married Joseph V. Rita on Jan. 31, 1931.

They had 64 years together and were blessed with three children: Joseph A. Rita, of Nevada; Rita "Rita" Repinec of Tamaqua; and Pat Rita of New Hampshire.

She also has eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Elsie is not your typical 99-year-old woman. She volunteers at St. Luke's Hospital in Coaldale and has been a volunteer for over 56 years.

She also works daily at the Tamaqua Area High School cafeteria.

She has been active in the Woman's VFW and a member for the last 60-plus years.

In honor of her birthday, she was hosted by her family at La Dolce Casa in Tamaqua, which included four generations.

Elsie was grateful to all those who gave her gifts, flowers, sent cards and well wishes in honor of her birthday.
