Three-vehicle crash in Schuylkill

Published March 11. 2013 05:04PM

State police at Schuylkill Haven reported investigating a three-vehicle crash, one a motorcycle, about 1:45 p.m. on Saturday, March 9, at the intersection of SR443 and Dad Burnhams Road, in Washington Township, Schuylkill County. It was one of two crashes probed by troopers over the weekend.

Troopers said Paul Swartz Jr., 53, of Schuylkill Haven, and Danielle Bevilacqua, 20, of Pine Grove, were both westbound on 443. Swartz slowed almost to a stop to turn left onto Dad Burnhams Road. Bevilacqua did not observe Swartz slowing and the front of her 2009 Mazda 3 hit the rear of Swartz's 2002 Chevrolet S10 pickup truck.

Upon impact the S10 was pushed into the path of a 2013 Harley Davidson motorcycle operated by David Guzick, 24, of Pottsville, who was eastbound at the time.

Guzick was seriously injured, troopers said, and flown by helicopter to the Reading Hospital. Bevilacqua sustained a minor injury and was taken to a Pottsville hospital, while Swartz was not injured.

Troopers noted Guzick was not wearing a helmet. Damages were disabling to all three vehicles.

A one-vehicle crash was reported about 6:19 a.m. on Sunday, March 10, along SR209 in Frailey Township. Troopers said Meredith L. Michaels, 42, of Williamstown, was driving a 2005 Saturn Ion eastbound and negotiating a right curve when she entered the opposing lane of travel. The Saturn continued across the westbound lane and struck a tree off the berm, where it came to rest.

Michaels was injured and flown by Lifeflight helicopter to the Geisinger Medical Center, Danville. Troopers said she was cited for traveling too fast for conditions.
