'Red Cross Month' proclaimed by board

A proclamation designating the month of March as, "Red Cross Month" , throughout Schuylkill County was adopted by the county commisioners at their work session held Wednesday at the courthouse in Pottsville.

The commissioners ask all residents of the county in recognizing as well as celebrating the many outstanding accomplishments of the county Chapter of the American Red Cross and encouraged every citizen to join in continuing support the efforts and mission of the Red Cross throughout the year.

Other business

A three year contract was awarded to TKO Cleaning Services, LLC, of Pottsville, for cleaning services at the county's Human Service Building, 410-420 N. Centre St., Pottsville, at a cost of $102,000.

Three contracts were approved for Losch Plumbing Company, Pottsville, to oversee the heating units at Rest Haven Home, courthouse, and prison at an annual cost of $2,288 each.

A contract was approved with PA Treatment and Healing Agency for purchase of services for the Drug and Alcohol Agency at a contract cap of $10,000; Dr. Michael Smink to provide dental services at Rest Haven Home at a contract cap of $4,8000; Signal Services Inc., to provide consulting services for the engineer's department and liquid fuels tax account for $3,988; Arcadia Hospice, LLC, for services to Rest Haven Home at $140 per day for respite care; and Ehrlich Pest Control, Pottsville, for services provided 9-1-1 Center at $56 per month.

Approval was given Lisa Mahall, director of the real estate department, to solicit bids for the repairs to County Bridge Number 160 which carries Mahantongo Mountain Road over Mahantongo Creek in Upper Mahantongo Township. Bids can be submitted to the county controller's office at the courthouse until 3 p.m., Monday, April 1.

Mahall, who is also the county engineer, requested using $575,000 from the liquid fuels tax fund for repairs to be made to the bridge. The bridge repairs include replacement and repair of the pre-stressed bems, bridge upgrades, and erosion control. The commissioners will take action on the request at next week's public meeting.

The board reviewed a proposed access easement the real estate department wishes to grant Daniel J. and Jacqueline S. Kokitus. The easement will cross county property located along the easterly side on Canal Street, Landingville Borough. Mahall informed the board the easement is necessary as Kokitus property is landlocked and the easement is the only access to their property.

Willam Liptok, director of public works, reviewed with the commissioners an agreement he seeks to enter with Simple Grinnell, Allentown, for testing, inspections, and maintenance coverage of county facilities. He reported these agreements are under a state contract and have been reviewed by the county solicitor. The agreement would be for three years at a cost of $52,822.

Personnel matters

Personnel matters were reviewed on which action will be taken at next week's public meeting.

Rest Haven Home - Seeks the transfer of Elaine Horzella, a licensed practical nurse, from per diem to part time duties; announced the retirement of Deborah Walchak, Pottsville, a full time practical nurse, the termination of Dekota Willis, Pottsville, a part time nurse's aide; and the resignation of Morgan Ferrari, Orwigsburg, as a part time nurse's aide.

Children and Youth Agency - Seeks the promotion of Samantha Kranch, Coaldale, from case worker 2 to case worker supervisor; and hiring of Mary Begley, Tamaqua, as a social services aide 2.

Court Administration Department - Seeks the appointment of Rebecca Weller, Orwigsburg, as a student intern.

County Coroner's Office announced the resignation of Paul Kennedy, Pottsville, as a depty coroner investigator.

At the salary board's work session discussions were held concerning creation of a position and salary set and adjusted.

The Conservation District requests the creation of a per diem rental clerk position at a salary of $10 per hour.

Children and Youth Services Agency asks the setting of the salary of Samatha Kranch at $39,727 per year and adjusting the salary of Jennifer Schumacher, a case worker supervisor, also at $39,727. Action will be taken at next week's public meeting.

Commissioner Frank Staudenmeier announced the monthly meeting of the Schuylkill County Employees Retirement Board will be held next Wednesday.
