Council hears complaints on burning and junk cars
A Weissport resident asked members of council to explain the town's burning ordinance.
"I don't want to be a bad neighbor," said Lynette Moyer. "But my neighbor just put in an outdoor burning area right outside my living room window."
Moyer was told by Gene Kershner, council president, that a person cannot burn in Weissport unless they have 25 feet from a neighboring property line. And then it must have a cover over the flames to prevent flying debris.
Kershner referred Moyer to contact the police officer.
"The first time they burn, I will," she said.
Another resident questioned the parking of unlicensed and unregistered cars on private property.
The unidentified man said that his neighbor appears to be collecting old cars on his property.
Kershner also referred the man to speak to the police officer.
Officer Steve Armbruster then reported that the Alert system is up and running.
He asked council to go into executive session to explain a police matter.
Arland Moyer, council member, said that he had attended a meeting with the Lehighton Water Authority, and learned that there will be a new water main installed on Prospect Street. He also said that through the meeting he learned that Weissport will have three years to spend the Community Development Block Grant money to repair Prospect Street.
Moyer also noted that he was told that other Weissport streets need new water mains and that Weissport could help the process by applying for grants to help pay the costs. White and Franklin Street are the only two streets left that need new water mains.
Attorney Michael Greek said that he has prepared a draft parking ordinance for Weissport Council. Council will adopt the ordinance at the next meeting on July 1.
Sue Pywar, council vice president, suggested that council consider having a Web site for Weissport.
"It would be a good way to inform residents about ordinances, fee schedules, street closings and provide a way for people to report police issues at a secure site," said Pywar.
