Two Lehigh River rescues this weekend

Published June 17. 2013 05:06PM

Local firefighters were kept busy this weekend with two rescue calls on the Lehigh River.

The first happened Saturday afternoon when a kayak overturned between Packerton and Jim Thorpe, sending a male and female into the river.

The male didn't see the female immediately after the incident and phoned the Carbon County Communications Center.

The Jim Thorpe Fire Department responded to the Jim Thorpe entry into the river and the Lehighton Fire Department went to an area in its borough.

Unknown to the male, the female was picked up by a rafter.

Firefighters assisted the male in getting off an island on the river.

At about 5 a.m. Sunday, the Lehighton Fire Department was again summoned when an individual reportedly fell off the railroad trestle that spans the river between Lehighton and Weissport.

The unidentified male was transported to a Lehigh Valley hospital. His condition is not known.
