Hrebek, Kosciolek on Carpenter Cup team

Published June 11. 2013 05:03PM

The Lehigh Valley Carpenter Cup team is set to take the field next week when they open up tournament play and seek their fourth championship in their 21st campaign.

The franchise is set to take the field June 17 at 12:30 pm against Delaware-South at Ashburn Field in FDR Park in Philadelphia.

A victory next Monday would land them with a contest against either Olympic-Colonial or Suburban One National-Bicentennial on June 21 at 9:30 am at Ashburn Field.

Two TIMES NEWS area players made the team. Pleasant Valley senior Dan Hrebek and Tamaqua sophomore Brett Kosciolek were selected.

Parkland leads the Carpenter Cup contingent with six players, while Whitehall and Stroudsburg each have four participants.

In 20 years of the tournament, Lehigh Valley holds a 29-17 record, with their 17 losses being the least of any competitor in the tournament. They've only lost five times in the opener of the tournament in the history of the franchise, three of which came in the first four years of the tournament.

So, as the Lehigh Valley enters their opening contest against Delaware-South next week, it's fair to say that they'll be favorites in the opener of the single-elimination tournament.

With 16 teams in the bracket, Lehigh Valley needs four wins to claim another title, something that general manager J.F. Pirro comes to fruition.

"Every team is unique and has its own set of characteristics," said Pirro of this year's roster. "We take players that can help us the best and we're confident with the roster we have this year."

With pitchers throwing for a maximum of three innings per contest, Pirro knows that having good combinations on the roster is important.

"The job of the pitchers is to always keep us in games," he said. "We've had fantastic pitching staffs in the past and this one is no different. It's really a luxury we have when it comes to selecting players for this team.

Lehigh Valley needs to win four games to claim the crown. The semifinals and final will be held at Citizens Bank Park on June 24 and 25.
