Tamaqua man facing DUI count

A Tamaqua man has been cited for driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol after almost causing an accident in Tamaqua Tuesday evening.

An officer on parade detail in the area of the Five Points Intersection observed a green Ford Taurus come within inches of striking a stopped vehicle. The officer went to speak to the driver of the Taurus, identified as William Steele, 54, of 321 E. Union St.Steele had an odor of alcohol coming from his person. His blood shot eyes and slurred speech indicated possible inebriation. He was given and failed field sobriety tests. The results of a portable breath test indicate a blood alcohol level of .18, more than double the leagl limit of .08.In addition to the DUI citation, Steele was charged with following too close for conditions.
