Weatherly celebrating 150th anniversary
The Borough of Weatherly will celebrate its 150th anniversary this year and many activities are being planned.
From Friday, Aug. 16 through Sunday, Aug. 18, a three-day celebration will kickoff the anniversary activities. All events will be held at Eurana Park.
On Aug. 16, the band Kartune will perform from 5 to 9 p.m., and Bingo will be played.
On Aug. 17, the Weatherly Rotary Club's Car Show will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Eurana Park ball field; bands Tightly Wound, formerly Dam Neighbors, will take the stage from noon to 3 p.m.; and Becky & the Beasts will perform from 5 to 8 p.m. There will also be a reptile display from noon to 5 p.m.; six inflated-bounce rides for kids available; and fireworks at dusk at the school district complex.
On Aug. 18, two Stephen Christopher Magic Shows will take place at noon and 1:30 p.m.; and the Polka band Just Us will play from 4 to 7 p.m.
A trolley will provide shuttle service from the school district parking lots on Sixth Street to Eurana Park on Third Street on Aug. 17. Handicap Accessible parking will be available at the school and in the parking lot of the former Crystal Inn on Third Street. Parking will also be available at the school on Friday and Sunday, but the trolley will not be available for shuttle service on those days.
Many local organizations and churches will offer an array of foods to keep the visitors happy, including halupki, halushki, ham and bean soup, pizza, chicken fingers, pierogies, french fries, roast beef sandwiches, hot dogs, hamburgers, barbecue, sausage and peppers and more.
There will also be Danish and baked items available.
The actual anniversary date of the borough is Tuesday, Oct. 8.
The celebration continues into October.
On Saturday, Oct. 5, a parade will take place through town with floats, bands and many other surprises.
Letters have been sent out to various organizations to participate in the parade. Responses have been coming in and anyone who would like to participate in the parade is asked to respond promptly in order to be included in the planning.
Organizations who have not received a letter and who would like to be a part of the event are asked to please contact either Norman Richie at (570) 427-4636 or Donnell Stump at (570) 579-8801.
The finale for the celebration will be a dinner dance on Sunday, Oct. 6. More information will follow on that social event.
The 150th anniversary committee is asking residents to show their pride by decorating their homes and businesses in red, white and blue from now until Oct. 8.
To register for the car show, call Lee at (570) 313-2300.
The next meeting of the committee for anyone interested is 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 6, at Eurana Park.
