Cub Scout Pack 209 holds Space Derby at Palmerton Rod & Gun Club
STEPH ANDERSON/SPECIAL TO THE TIMES NEWS Cub Scout Owen Lundy watches Mick Ahner as he winds the propellers on Logan Pfaff's and Austin Ahner's space rockets.
Cub Scout Pack 209 held a Space Derby at the Palmerton Rod & Gun Club on Sunday, Jan. 13. Mick Ahner wound the propellers on a special machine he built that winds four propellers at the same time using a chain-drive system and a power drill with a counter. Every rocket gets 100 revolutions with the drill.
Winners were Austin Ahner, first; Logan Pfaff, second and Kid's Choice (the kids vote on their favorite); Luke Drake, third; Jackston Stein, fourth, and Hugo Marin, fifth. Nathan Werner was the sibling winner.
Each year, the Pack does a different "Derby": either the Pinewood Derby, the Raingutter Regatta, or the Space Derby. Scouts are encouraged to construct their own rocket, boat, or car, with a little help from their parents. It takes a lot of parental and leader involvement to have everything come together perfectly for a fun afternoon for all.
Pizzas were ordered from Sunny's Pizza, because the start time was 5 p.m. in order to be done by 8 p.m. There were some long faces after losing, but everyone is encouraged to "Do Their Best" and they soon forget about their loss, and cheer on their fellow scouts.
Pack 209 currently has 40 Cub Scouts, and is chartered to Jerusalem United Church of Christ, Trachsville. Special pack meetings are held at the Palmerton Rod & Gun Club when they require more room. Both organizations are very important to the Pack's survival. For information about the Pack, visit the website at www.cubpack209.org.
