Lehighton's famous Persian doughnut will soon be a thing of the past.
A "Persian Doughnut Retirement Party" is scheduled for Sunday, February 10 from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Lehighton Bakery - located at 158 South First St. in the borough.
"In order to guarantee that they will get the doughnuts, we recommend that people pre-order the Persians for that day," said Pam Gothard. "When the doughnuts are gone, they're gone. We won't be baking any more of them."
Only Persian doughnuts will be available for purchase.
Gothard and her husband, Bill "Andy," and his family have owned Lehighton Bakery for the past 10 years. With the closing of the bakery on December 29 of this past year, the storied doughnut is retiring.
The Persian is a cinnamon bun-like pastry covered with a vanilla or chocolate icing - topped off with a dollop of cherry strawberry glaze.
Lehighton's "version of the Persian" was made famous years ago by Young's Bakery. Following a near 50-year run, the family bakery turned off its ovens for the last time on November 22, 1995. For the past 10 years, Lehighton Bakery has served as the "home" of the storied doughnut.
To pre-order Persian doughnuts for pick-up on February 10, call Gerry at Gothard Realty at (610) 377-2700.
