Man with DUI suspension, charged with another DUI after West Penn crash

A Hazle Township man, under DUI suspension, was arraigned recently after crashing his car head-on into another driver just before 7 a.m. on Oct. 18 in West Penn Township.
West Penn Township Police are charging Jeffrey J. Spare, 36, of Hazle Township with aggravated assault by vehicle, aggravated assault by vehicle while driving under the influence (DUI) and accident involving death/injury while not properly licensed.
Police stated that Spare, who's license was suspended for DUI during the crash, has had multiple driving infractions, to include three cases of speeding, two cases of careless driving, leaving scene of an accident and two DUIs.
Last year, Spare was sentenced to 72 days in prison for a count of driving under the influence filed against him by state police at Hazleton for a Sept. 12, 2011 incident in Hazleton, according to a court docket.
The accident sent Janet Paisley Smoldon, 42, of West Penn, to the hospital in serious condition.
Smoldon, who is a teacher at Schuylkill Intermediate Unit 29 and drama club adviser at the Tamaqua Area High School, is still recovering in the hospital.
