Published January 09. 2013 05:02PM

An Easton man, formerly of Slatington, is in trial in Carbon County court this week charged with attempted rape and other counts.

John Anthony Vega, 29, is facing two counts each of criminal attempt-rape by forcible compulsion, burglary, and criminal trespass, three counts of indecent assault, and one count of simple assault.

He is accused of entering the home of a then 78-year-old woman in Lower Towamensing Township on two separate occasions and attempting to rape her. The incidents occurred in October 2007 and again in May 2008.

Last December Vega was sentenced in Lehigh County court for similar incidents in North Whitehall involving a then 77-year-old woman as the victim. He was convicted of aggravated assault, aggravated indecent assault, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, attempted rape, and burglary.

He was sentenced to serve 30 to 64 years in a state prison by a Lehigh County judge.

The Carbon case is before President Judge Roger N. Nanovic II. The trial began Monday with jury selection and is expected to conclude on Thursday.
