Published February 07. 2013 05:02PM

Efforts to raise the level of interest in music are under way in the Palmerton Area School District.

Don Szena, vice president of the Palmerton Area Music Parents Association, introduced the organization to the school board at a workshop meeting on Tuesday.

Szena said the group will be supporting students in kindergarten through 12th grade, and added that they currently have 68 members.

"Our focus is to provide and support the kids and the district to continue to grow the music program," Szena said. "We have a high number at the elementary level; our goal is to get better participation at the junior high and senior high level."

Szena added "I think we're off to a good start. We have had good community support as well."

The group's mission statement is to support the program in all Palmerton area schools in all areas of music development, including all instrumental and vocal performance, and activities aimed at the welfare of all students, educationally and musically, to provide them with an enriching experience, enabling them to develop their talents to the highest degree of proficiency.

Officers include Szena; Chrissy Rehatchek, president; Marcia Heinick, secretary; and Elise Binder, treasurer.

Szena said the PAMPA will hold its next meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 5, at the Palmerton Area Library.
