Local Trees for Troops program in ninth year
Kelly Fritz, a teacher at Mahoning Valley Elementary School, presents an envelope with $517 which was raised by Shull-David Elementary students for the Trees For Troops progam.
This year marks the ninth year area Christmas tree growers have been involved in the Trees For Troops program, and Drew Yenser, from Yenser's Tree Farm, hopes it will be the year that they make their biggest contribution.
The final tally won't be known until next week, but Yenser expects to surpass last years total of 461 trees.
The final batch of trees will be pulling out on FedEx trucks on Monday morning, with their final destination being Fort Polk in Louisiana and Fort Stewart in Georgia.
At a press conference on Friday Yenser mentioned that there are many, many sponsors and individual supporters, but mentioned that the biggest supporter was most likely Sue Salerno, who runs a 31 Bag Bingo at the Mahoning Valley Ambulance building, with the proceeds going to the Trees For Troops program. This year that event raised $3,425, enough to purchase 137 trees.
