Deer blamed for crash on I81

A deer was blamed for a one-vehicle crash along Interstate 81 in New Castle Township, Schuylkill County. The crash occurred about 7:23 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 4.

State police at Frackville said Gene P. Vrooman, 79, of Scotia, N.Y., was driving a 2002 Ford Ranger southbound when he swerved to avoid a deer on the roadway. He lost control of the truck which went onto the east berm and struck an embankment. Upon impact the truck rotated counter-clockwise, rolled onto its roof, and came to rest on its wheels blocking the left lane and facing west.

Vrooman was injured and taken to the Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, with non-life threatening injuries, troopers said.

Troopers cited Vrooman for driving on roadways laned for traffic.
