VFW picnic

VFW Post 5069 will hold its annual "Veterans Picnic" on Sept. 8 at the West Penn Community Park. The event is open to all local veterans, who may also bring one guest and is free of charge.

The picnic will begin at noon.

Reservations are required in order to ensure there are enough refreshments and food. For more information, or to make a reservation, call (570) 386-2133 or 386-5444 by Sept. 4.

YMCA news

The Tamaqua YMCA is now accepting registrations for Fall swim lessons and for the 2013-2014 Jack and Jill Preschool program. Applications are available at the Y welcome center in the former Jamesway Plaza.

Swim lessons will begin on Sept. 16.

Zion Lewistown

This Sunday's service, for members of Zion Church in the Lewistown Valley, will be held at Leiby's Grove. The Rev. Jim Williams will officiate at the 10:30 a.m. service.

A reception luncheon for Pastor Williams will be held on Sept. 8. A reception committee meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 29 to finalize plans. Reservation forms are due this Sunday.

Bethany EC

The Rev. Kevin Roberts will officiate at the 8 a.m. traditional service this Sunday in Bethany Evangelical Congregational Church. The contemporary service will be held at 11 a.m. at the Tamaqua YMCA. Sunday school classes will meet at 9:15 a.m., at the church.

Also on Sunday, the ministry council will meet at 1 p.m.

Activities for next week will include: Wednesday, Tamaqua Youth Ministry meets at 6:30 p.m.; Saturday, musician practice at 8:30 a.m., praise rehearsal at 9:30 a.m.

Calvary Methodist

During the summer months, all services and activities affiliated with Calvary Evangelical United Methodist Church in the Lewistown Valley will be held at the Lewistown Valley Tabernacle, 614 Valley Road, Tamaqua.

The Rev. Dr. Edward Bean will officiate at the 10:25 a.m. service this Sunday, which will include a dedication of the tabernacle pavilion and grounds.

The Jacobs Brothers will present a gospel concert, at the tabernacle, at 7 p.m. on Aug. 22.

The annual Tabernacle services will begin Aug. 23 and continue through Labor Day evening. Evening services will be held daily at 7 p.m. Special guests will be evangelists and song leaders, the Rev. Jeff and Jeanie Shelburne (daily); Austin Sullivan, missionary on Aug. 23; the Rev. George Holley, Aug. 26 through Aug. 30.

Special music will be presented by the Wehry Family on Sept. 1 and 2.

St. John UCC

Sunday worship services are held at 9:30 a.m. in St. John United Church of Christ. The weekly radio broadcast is aired at 11:30 a.m., every Sunday, on WLSH Radio, AM station 1410.
