Emergency responders were called to the intersection of West Spruce and S. Railroad streets, Tamaqua, just before 7 a.m. today, after a driver crashed into the support of a railroad crossing. Police reported that Mark John Ankner Jr., Wilkes-Barre, the driver of a black Hyundai GLS V6, was traveling east down W. Spruce Street, when he lost control and struck the crossing. Ankner, who initially complained of hand pain, later refused treatment. Police said charges are expected to be filed. Patrolman Thomas Rodgers is the investigating officer. Tamaqua firefighters and fire police helped police direct traffic around the scene during the response and while the vehicle was towed. Also responding were Tamaqua ambulance and rescue squad.
