Alcohol may have played role in Walker Twp. crash
ANDREW LEIBENGUTH/TIMES NEWS A car lies on its roof along Wildcat Road in Walker Township following a one-vehicle crash. The driver of the car, Leonard Ruggiero, 21, is facing a DUI charge.
A Schuylkill County driver is facing a driving under the influence (DUI) charge while two passengers will also be charged as the result of a one-vehicle crash that occurred about 4:15 a.m. today along Wildcat Road, near Reynolds Road, in Walker Township.
State police at Frackville said Leonard Ruggiero, 21, of Coaldale, was driving a 1998 Volkswagen Jetta eastbound when he lost control on the wet road. The car went onto the berm and hit an embankment.
Police said the crash momentum then caused the car to overturn, with the vehicle coming to rest on its roof in the middle of the road.
Ruggiero received an arm injury and was transported to the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township, by Tamaqua ambulance.
Troopers said alcohol was a factor in the crash and Ruggiero is facing a DUI count, pending blood test results.
Two passengers, Matthew Weaver, 18, and a 17-year-old juvenile, both from Lansford, were found to have consumed alcohol and will be cited for underage drinking. Those two passengers, and a third, Andrew Romig, 23, of Lansford, were all not injured.
Assisting troopers were firefighters from the Citizens Fire Company, Tamaqua, and the New England/Walker Township Fire Company.
Also on scene were Tamaqua Rescue Squad and ambulances from Tamaqua, Lehighton Paramedics and New Ringgold.
