Heritage Hill woman celebrates 96 years
Nellie (Greenwood) Johnson, a resident at Heritage Hill Senior Community, Weatherly, celebrated her 96th birthday on April 24.
Born in Halifax, Yorkshire County, England in 1917, Nellie has also resided in Cregah, Belfast (Northern Ireland) and Union, Newark, Irvington and Branchville, New Jersey.
Nellie was married to her loving husband, Horace, on April 27, 1946 and they both came to America on the Queen Mary in 1955, searching for those streets of gold. They were married for 49 years until his death in 1995.
She has two children, Alice Giunta who resides in Frankford, N.J., and Stephen Johnson, who resides in Langhorne, Pa. She is the proud grandmother of six grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Nellie worked in Homphrey's carpet factory in Halifax, England and worked as a correspondence clerk at Kemper Insurance Agency in Summit, N.J.
Her hobbies include reading, singing and dancing. She was a member of the "light opera" and she sang in her church choir for 20 years.
