Lehighton considers a second rec center
Lehighton Borough Council will look into the possibility of constructing a second recreation center.
Noting that the present center is used nearly at capacity, council members said a second one could be utilized for such things as banquets and parties, as well as sporting events with seating for spectators.
It was stressed that no formal decision is being made on such a structure; that it is only in the consideration phase.
However, Councilman George Kogut was directed to discuss the matter with borough engineer Bruce Steigerwalt "to come up with a cost figure."
Kogut, who suggested the second rec center, termed it "a long-term goal right now."
He said he feels the rec center adds value to the community.
Councilman Scott Rehrig supported Kogut on the suggestion and suggested the borough begin the planning phase. He indicated such a building might produce funds for the borough.
Attorney James Nanovic, the borough's solicitor, said that when Kogut meets with the engineer, he should have some type of specifications for the building.
Several other recreation matters were also discussed during the meeting:
• Kogut said a bocce ball court is presently being installed at Baer Memorial Park. He said this project will be completed shortly.
• He said a plan to construct basketball courts at Baer Memorial probably won't happen this year, adding, "we probably will have to revisit that issue and try to get grant money."
• Kogut noted that a meeting was held with himself, recreation director Tom Evans, and a representative of PepsiCo regarding discounts the Pepsi Cola Company can provide to have its products sold at the rec center, swimming pool and other recreational facilities.
