Paraglider crashes near Palmerton

Published April 23. 2013 08:09AM

A paraglider crashed near Palmerton on Sunday afternoon.

State police at Lehighton said the incident occurred about 2:56 p.m. near the area of the Valley Lodge at the Blue Mountain Ski Area, in Lower Towamensing Township.

Troopers said the initial report was that a plane had crashed. However, upon arrival on scene troopers learned that it was a paraglider that crashed.

According to troopers the gilder, which is a nonmotorized craft within the same class as a hang glider, crashed when the pilot began to spin while in the air. It subsequently caused his lines to become twisted on one side causing the flap on one side to deflate and then crashed to the ground.

The pilot, identified as Eugene Michael Gleason, 60, of Hoboken, N.J., was taken to the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township, by Palmerton ambulance for treatment of minor injuries, troopers said.

Troopers added that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will further investigate the incident.
