Everyone knows that Boy Scouts are loyal, trustworthy and helpful. A Boy Scout in training is called a Cub Scout. Cub Scouts may be a little younger, but they still follow the same creed.

That's why Cub Scout Pack 41 of Palmerton wanted to do a service outreach project during the Palmerton Community Festival. They came up with the idea to volunteer to fill food orders from the festival for the residents at the Palmerton High Rise on Saturday and Sunday.

They prepared a menu listing of the various food vendors. The residents filled out their orders and the Cub Scouts picked up the lists, filled the orders and carried the items back in their wagon.

Claire Heiny, one of the residents, thought it was a wonderful idea and was able to enjoy a chicken barbecue, peach cobbler and some molasses cookies.

"I only wish they had done it on Friday night, too," she said.

Kay Costenbader was able to feast on a pulled pork sandwich.

"I like this idea. If I had wanted anything to eat from the festival, I would have had to depend on someone else," Kay said.

Carrie Breiner was able to dine on festival pizza and strawberry shortcake for her Saturday night dinner, thanks to the Cub Scouts.

"This is very nice," she said appreciatively.

"We thought since there aren't too many boys joining Scouts right now, we'd try to get the word out about the kinds of things we do for others," said Eric Reif, den leader for Cub Scout Pack 41.

If you have a boy between the ages of 7-11, who is interested in joining the Cub Scouts, they will be meeting on Sunday, Sept. 30 at 5 p.m. at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church at 502 Lafayette Ave. You can call Matthew Wentz at (484) 553-6840 or visit minsitrails.com for more information.
