Fugitive caught in Monroe

Pocono Mountain Regional police reported the arrest of a Monroe County man on fugitive from justice and other charges.

Police said on Tuesday, Sept. 11, about 6:50 p.m. they were informed that a wanted person out of New York City was at the School House apartments, located along Main St., in Coolbaugh Township.

Police went to the scene and made contact with several individuals outside the apartments. The wanted person was observed running into the apartments. Police pursued him into the building with the suspect jumping out a back window.

Police set up a perimeter and called in K9 Niko. Niko found the suspect hiding in thick brush. He was identified as Wayne Weinhardt, 46, of Coolbaugh Township. He was taken to the Pocono Medical Center, East Stroudsburg, for treatment of injuries he sustained in the incident.

Police also noted that the apartment Weinhardt fled into he had no permission to be in and that there was a young child in it at the time.

He was released to the custody of police. He was arraigned on charges of flight to avoid apprehension, fugitive from justice, resisting arrest, criminal trespass, and endangering the welfare of a child.

Police noted that the New York City warrant for Weinhardt is for robbery.
