Tamaqua, Northwestern pick up soccer victories

Tamaqua and Northwestern picked up victories in both girls and boys soccer to highlight Thursday's scholastic sports action.


So. Lehigh-Northwestern

Sarah Segan scored four goals and helped lead Northwestern to a 5-0 victory over Colonial League foe Southern Lehigh.

Segan scored two goals in each half en route to increasing her TIMES NEWS area lead. Fellow Tiger Alexis Gawelko had the team's other goal.

Laura Hill made five saves in net to preserve the shutout.


Wilson blanked Palmerton on the Colonial League soccer pitch, winning 3-0.

The Warriors' Casey Carl had a goal and an assist in the winning effort.

Palmerton goalie Courtney Getz made seven saves in net.


Tamaqua defeated Columbia Montour Vo-Tech, 5-0, in a non-league game.

Kailee Rottet recorded a natural hat trick for the Raiders with two goals in the first half and one in the second. Kaleigh Rabenold and Hanna Zoba added second half goals to finish out the scoring. Brynn Lehatto had two assists while Lynn Kistler and Alex Wagner added one each.

Carly Sassaman notched her third straight shutout for Tamaqua (3-1,1-0) thanks in large part to a strong defensive effort that limited CMVT to just two shots.

No. Lehigh-Saucon Vy.

Saucon Valley rolled to a 6-0 Colonial League victory over Northern Lehigh.

A. Binn and Protchko both scored twice for the Panthers.


Northwestern-So. Lehigh

Northwestern edged Southern Lehigh, 2-1, in Colonial League action.

Matt Strickland scored the winning goal for the Tigers.

Tamaqua-No. Schuylkill

Tamaqua blanked North Schuylkill, 2-0, in Schuylkill League action.

Cesare Picone and Martin Sedlock scored second half goals for the Blue Raiders. Justin Delp and Giovanni Passalacqua had assists.

Tamaqua goalie Tyler Cimino made five saves to record the shutout.

The Raiders finished with a 19-6 advantage in shots and a 6-3 edge in corners.

Northern Lehigh-Saucon Valley

Saucon Valley scored five goals in the first half and went on to shutout Northern Lehigh, 6-0, in Colonial League play.

The Bulldogs fall to 1-3.


Palmerton knocked off Wilson in Colonial League play, 5-1.

Austin Shupp had a hat trick for the Bombers while Devon Santos and Harley Appelbaum added one goal apiece. Santos and Spencer Shigo added assists.

Palmerton goalie Rich Roselli made five saves.

Tri-Valley-Jim Thorpe

Jim Thorpe scored three times in each half and ran away from Tri-Valley, 6-0.

Matt Rich tallied a hat-trick for the Olympians by scoring two consecutive goals in the second half. Teammate Corey Ligenza added two goals, while Steven Principe tallied another. Ligenza and Rich also had three and two assists respectively.

Goalie Justin Kaminski stopped seven shots en rourte to the shutout.


Pleasant Valley-PM West

Pleasant Valley took three doubles matches and went on to defeat MVC foe Pocono Mountain West on the tennis courts, 5-2.

Doubles teams of Sarina Tufano/Mackie Caffrey, Paola Mieles/Nyiah Navarez and Cassi Snook/Ellie Heron all won in straight sets.

No. 1 singles player Madison Olexson and No. 3 singles player Emily Thek each won in straight sets as well.

Kutztown took all but one match en route to beating Tamaqua, 6-1 in non-league tennis action.

The only Raider to post a victory on the day was No. 4 singles player Carly Fenstermacher. She won in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5.

Lehighton stayed perfect on the young season with its 25-16, 25-10, 25-22 non-league volleyball victory over Catasauqua.

Tiff Thompson led the Indians (2-0) with 10 kills. Teammate Jackie Jordan added nine kills, seven digs and one ace.

Fellow Indian Taylor Yurasitts dished out 19 assists in the win.


Marian breezed to a 25-9, 25-8, 25-3 Schuylkill League victory over Weatherly.

The Fillies were led by Marykate Sherkness's 10 kill, seven ace performance. Also playing well were Abby O'Donnell (18 assists, seven aces) and Abigail Stankiewitch (four kills, four blocks).

For Weatherly (0-2, 0-4), Jess Adamczyk had four blocks, two kills, two digs and three aces; Shannon Sarosky added four digs; and Lindsay Douglass had three digs.

Saucon Valley-Northwestern

Saucon Valley beat Northwestern in a non-league match, 22-25, 25-23, 25-21, 25-20.

Trista Cunningham led the Tigers at the net with seven kills. She also added three aces. Also playing well for Northwestern were Sara Hufnagle (12 assists) and Jordan Veppert (six aces, 17 digs).

Panther Valley-Pine Grove

Panther Valley outlasted Pine Grove, 26-24, 25-27, 25-22, 25-19, in a Schuylkill League match.

The Panthers (2-0, 3-0) were led by a pair of "sister acts." Richelle Van Horn had 11 service points, nine assists and five kills while sister Kelsey Van Horn had nine assists, eight service points, three kills and three aces. They were joined by the Mikovich sisters as Marly had 13 service points, four kills and three aces and Jamey had six kills and four digs.

Also contributing to the victory for Panther Valley were Stacy Markovich (five kills, three service points); Jessica Weise (eight service points, three kills); Kristyn Gates (13 digs, 12 service points); and Kayla Kashlak (six digs).

Pleasant Valley-ES North

Pleasant Valley won its opening MVC match against East Stroudsburg North, 25-3, 25-9, 25-8.

Courtney Miller led the Bears (3-0, 1-0) with eight kills. Breanna Joseph added six kills and three aces.

Kiersten Griesback and Steph Schmitt handed out eight and seven assists respectively.

Blue Mountain-Tamaqua

Blue Mountain swept Tamaqua, 25-8, 25-17, 25-15 in a Schuylkill League match.

Carly Trovinger led the Raiders with seven service points and 12 assists. Devon Sweeney had a solid all-around game as she contributed seven kills, three blocks and three digs. Rebecca Minehan led the defense with six digs



Catasauqua scored two goals in each half and went on to double up Palmerton, 4-2 in Colonial League play.

The Bombers' two goals were scored by Kyla Rodriques and Jessica Debski. Both goals were scored in the second half.

Hannah Edwards and Megan Covert each scored twice for Catty.



Tamaqua's Troy Reinhardt fired a 78 to lead the Raiders to a 355-395 golf victory over Lourdes.

Mike Weinert (89), Travis Miller (90) and Scott Zellner (98) rounded out the scoring for the locals.

Mike Gottstein fired a 2-over-par 74 to lead Marian to a 311-429 Schuylkill league victory over Weatherly.

The Colts' Josh Green (77) and Mark Postupack (78) also broke 80 on the Mahoning Valley Country Club course.

The victory lifts Marian's record to 7-0 in league play and 8-1 overall.
