N'western gets cross country sweeps

The Northwestern cross country teams flexed their muscles as both the boys and girls swept multi-team Colonial League meets on Wednesday.

CROSS COUNTRYNorth Schuylkill-TamaquaNorth Schuylkill swept Tamaqua in a Schuylkill League meet.The Spartan boys captured four of the top five places en route to a 19-38 victory. Brendan Shearn crossed the tape in 17:08, over two minutes ahead of second-place Devin Mashack.The Lady Spartans rolled to an 18-43 victory. The Olympians placed four runners in the top seven including Jonathan Condly, Jake Saxon and Zach Nace. Pottsville defeated Jim Thorpe 24-31.In the girls meet, Pottsville defeated Jim Thorpe 16-47, while Blue Mountain posted a 17-46 victory over the Lady Olympians. The Tigers swept Moravian Academy, Notre Dame, Pen Argyl, Salisbury, Southern Lehigh and Northern Lehigh.Northwestern's Tyler Stelmack won the boys race with a time of 16:47.27. Six Northwestern runners finished in the top nine.For the Lady Tigers, Haley Yost led the way with a second-place finish, which paced three Lady Tigers that finished in the top five.The Northern Lehigh boys defeated Notre Dame, Pen Argyl and Salisbury, but suffered losses to Northwestern, Southern Lehigh and Moravian Academy. Sage Terembula got the Indians on the board off a Sarah Keer assist, while Keer tacked on a goal of her own.The Cardinals tied it up at 2-2 with Murtha's first goal late in regulation (4:04) before her eventual game-winner late in overtime.Pocono Mountain East outshot Lehighton 12-11.
