On this day, it was cars, and not airplanes, that lined the tarmac.

A sea of top-flight, extraordinary vehicles took center stage at the 24th annual Slatington Lions Club Antique/Collector Car Show Sunday at the Slatington Airport along Route 873.As of noon, 493 cars had been registered, according to Ted Kistler, event chairman. Last year's event attracted 428 vehicles."I'd like to thank everybody for coming out and supporting us," Kistler said. "The people were skeptical because of the weather."The first 200 preregistered cars received a custom dash plaque, while the first 150 preregistered received a special participation award.Daryl Betz and Patty Kern, of New Tripoli, entered their Champagne-colored 1923 T-Bucket into the event."It's local," Betz said. "It's nice."Joseph Chirico, 12, and his brother, Michael, 9, of Walnutport, attended the event with their mother, Nicky Chirico."My pop pop has a car [in the event]," Joseph said. "There are a lot of nice cars that I would love to own."Nicky said the event was a real joy to be a part of."There are just a lot of nice cars," she said. "It's not quite as hot as last year."Sponsored by the Slatington Lions Club, Inc., the car show is the organization's biggest fundraiser of the year, Kistler said."We also do a Comedy Night, and sell Christmas Trees," he said. "We've been averaging a $30,000 donation to the community."The event also included a flea market vendor setup, along with food, refreshments, and entertainment all day.Unfortunately, rain arrived as the awards were being handed out.Monica Kuntz, of Slatington, was the lucky winner of a 1994 Pontiac Trans Am, one of 700 which were made.Cash prizes were given to the following individuals: second, George Danho, Slatington; third, Rick LaBarre, Slatington; fourth, Mike Acker, Lehighton; and fifth, Donna Johnson, Ashfield.Alex Shereba Jr. was presented with a memorial plaque in honor of his father, Alex, who passed away last fall. He had attended the previous 23 car shows.Money was given at the 50/50 drawing, along with four computers.In all, there were 34 different classes, with three trophies per class, for a total of 102 trophies given out.There were also nine special awards given out. Due to the rain, the names of the individuals were not available in time for today's publication, according to Slatington Lions Club officials.The award were" Lions President Award; Mayor's Award; Masonic Award; Bup Kibler Memorial Award; People's Choice Award; Oldest Vehicle in Show Award; Oldest Show Participant Award; Furthest Driven Show Vehicle Award; and Most Drastically Altered Award.
