Even though the weather Sunday was dark and damp, more the a hundred brave souls came out to Dog Days in the Park at Lehighton Park.

The event was the brainchild of Lehighton Area High School junior, Kamara Litchauer, as her senior project. The goal was to raise money for the Carbon County Animal Shelter.

There was food, music and vendors featuring animal-related merchandise.

Consummate K-9 of Andreas put on a demonstration of both human rescue/recovery by Lucas the German Shepard Dog and bomb detection by Buttercup, a Belgian Malinois.

The event highlight was a dog costume contest and it concluded with a dog walk.

Carbon County Commissioner Tom J. Gerhard attended Dog Days in the Park, and said he was pleased with the hard work and dedication of Litchauer, as well as the efforts of those operating the county shelter.

"I am so proud of our crew at the shelter, they are doing a great job," said Gerhard.

He added that the commissioners plan to recognize Litchauer for her efforts at their meeting this week.

Litchauer said she plans to make Dog Days in the Park and annual event.
