Trying to stay close to the leader
BY ED HEDES
Just four weeks to go in the regular season and it's been quit an interesting one at that.
Tamaqua has flexed its muscle now and I sure as heck down't want to jinx them. It sure looks like Sam Bonner's Raiders have a great shot at running the table in the Anthracite Football League now after putting the hurt on North Schuylkill.
Marian has some big games coming up starting with a trip to Minersville tonight, JIm Thorpe and Palmerton are still looking for their first wins and Panther Valley must go the rest of the year without outstanding running back and linebacker Richie Smith, who had a season ending ankle injury last week against Marian.
Northern Lehigh visits Northwestern Lehigh and Pleasant Valley hosts East Stroudsburg South in two big games for local schools.
Bob Ford sits two games behind JasonBoris and will try to keep the pressure on the leader, while I just hope to stay close for a final season run.
So here goes:
SCHUYLKILL HAVEN AT TAMAQUA - The memorable season continues for the Raiders, who can't afford to let up here and take the Hurricanes lightly...Tamaqua, 28-12.
JIM THORPE AT MAHANOY AREA - Thought the Olympians would get the "W" last week and didn't. This week we go with them again...Jim Thorpe, 21-7.
MARIAN AT MINERSVILLE - Colts must continue to mount a run know to stay incontention for the AFL crown and seeding for a District 11 Class A berth...Marian, 28-13.
PANTHER VALLEY AT SHENANDOAH VALLEY - Panther pass rush will be crucial against the air-happy Blue Devils and they'll need a new wrinkle in their offense without Smith...Shenandoah Valley, 28-14.
NORTHERN LEHIGH AT NORTHWESTERN LEHIGH - Backyard Brawl to raise some money for two great causes tonight and despite the records, this one is always a dandy...Northern Lehigh, 31-12.
PALMERTON AT BANGOR - The Slaters suffered their first loss of the season last week against Catasauqua. The Bombers begin a tough run here...Bangor, 28-7.
EAST STROUDSBURG SOUTH AT PLEASANT VALLEY - The Bears took it to the limit and won by a blocked extra point last week. This week it could be tougher, but...Pleasant Valley,, 21-17.
LEHIGHTON AT ALLEN - If the Indians win this one, they may want to put turf in their new stadium blue prints or play all of their home games at J. Birney Crum...Lehighton, 28-20.
POCONO MOUNTAIN EAST AT STROUDSBURG - After losing to Northampton on opening night, the Mountaineers have set sight on an MVC championship...Stroudsburg, 21-6.
SAUCON VALLEY AT NOTRE DAME - A tossup game in the Colonial League as far as this corner is concerned. And the coin flip goes to...Saucon Valley, 14-13.
CATASAUQUA AT PEN ARGYL - Second test in the last two weeks for the Roughies. And they pass again...Catasauqua, 28-14.
MOUNT CARMEL AT NORTH SCHUYLKILL - Spartans play their third home game in a row, but were knocked down a notch by Tamaqua last week...Mount Carmel, 31-21.
WILLIAMS VALLEY AT TRI-VALLEY - Two unbeatens knock heads here and I would usually go with the home team, but this time, it's...Williams Valley, 21-20.
ALLENTOWN CENTRAL CATHOLIC AT WHITEHALL - Zephyrs seem to have a little too much defense for the Vikings this time around...Whitehall, 21-14.
EMMAUS AT LIBERTY - Not the same old Hurricanes from a couple of years ago and the Hornets seem to have more sting in them...Emmaus, 28-12.
