Hauto Rt. 54 curve solved

Route 54 in between Nesquehoning and Hometown has fewer curves as PennDOT contractors are nearing completion of their realignment and straightening of the Hauto Curve.

The project, which is located in the village of Hauto, has straightened the S-curve on the road.According to PennDOT, there are several reasons they straightened the dangerous "S" turns. One of which involved four deadly crashes that have occurred at the curve over the past decade, as well as many other incidents involving major injuries. The current project involved roadway realignment, earthen work, new signage, as well as milling and paving work. During the project, PPL and its subcontractors also moved and replaced numerous poles located alongside SR54.The work, which started in early March, is expected to be finished by November or early December. PennDOT stressed that the completion date is dependent on weather.Reading Materials Inc., Skippack, is the general contractor on the $3,629,340 project.
