Parrot Head Club aids 6 area fire companies
AMY MILLER/TIMES NEWS Members of various fire departments recently accepted $500 donations from the Black Diamond Parrot Head Club of Summit Hill. Accepting for the Nesquehoning area fire departments are, from left, John Leinthall, firefighter with the Lake Hauto Fire Company, receiving the check from Alyssa Bartelt, Parrot Head Club member; Rick Franco, co-vice president of the club, presenting a check to Jim Nardozzi, New Columbus Fire Chief; and Mary Ann Franco, co-vice president of the club, presenting to John McArdle, Nesquehoning Fire Chief.
The Black Diamond Parrot Head Club of Summit Hill always likes to give back to the community.
This year, the club chose six area fire companies Nesquehoning Hose, Lake Hauto, and New Columbus Fire Companies in Nesquehoning; Diligence Fire Company No. 1 in Summit Hill; Coaldale Fire Department in Coaldale and American Fire Company No. 1 of Lansford as the recipients of the proceeds raised by its annual Margaritaville Open golf tournament, held this past August.
Tom Tirpak, president of the club, explained that the group tries to coincide the donations with fire prevention week. Each company received a check for $500 to help cover costs for various things, such as fuel, equipment, or events they have planned.
"This is the ninth year we are doing this," Tirpak said.
Fred Bartelt, secretary of the club, added that when the group began donating the golf tournament proceeds, it started with donating to one fire company Diligence Fire Company No. 1. As the Margaritaville Open grew in popularity, so has the number of fire departments who receive donations.
Representatives from each of the six fire departments were present at the club's last meeting, where they received the donations.
All were thankful for the much needed help.
Tirpak noted that this was the kick-off event of the Black Diamond Parrot Head Club's donation season. Next month, the group will begin donating food items to the local food pantries; as well as supplies to the Salvation Army and toys for Toys for Tots.
