Plenty of big games on tap this week

Published October 05. 2012 05:03PM

We're at the midway point of the football season. Rivalry week is upon us and there are quite a few questions that will be answered when the final whistle sounds tonight.

Brad Hurley and Jason Boris are tied for first but there are a pile of guys breathing down their neck.

Marian visits Panther Valley and Northwestern travels to Palmerton for two games between rivals. Let's not forget the Pocono Mountain East-Pleasant Valley showdown for "The Bucket."

Then Tamaqua tries to stay unbeaten when it travels to Anthracite League stud North Schuylkill and Pen Argyl invades Northern Lehigh for a crucial Colonial League contest.

Hope you caught your breath after all of that. Let's take a look at what we see as the game plan for this week:

MARIAN AT PANTHER VALLEY - Took both the Colts and Panthers last week and came out on the losing end. The Colts and Panthers both need wins to stay in the District 11 and Anthracite Football League hunt. The team that is the underdog is usually in the hunt until the end in this one...Panther Valley, 14-13.

JIM THORPE AT MINERSVILLE - Sooner or later, the Olympians are going to get that "W." We vote for sooner...Jim Thorpe, 28-25.

TAMAQUA AT NORTH SCHUYLKILL - If this game was up on Stadium Hill in Tamaqua, I'd take the Raiders. Spartans just don't lose at home, but this one won't be easy...North Schuylkill, 20-14.

NORTHWESTERN AT PALMERTON - The Bombers need a win badly and it was against the Tigers that they played their best game of the year last season. This one could come down to special teams...Palmerton, 14-13.

PEN ARGYL AT NORTHERN LEHIGH - Bulldogs bounced back last week after a tough loss at Palisades the week before. Green Knights are coming off a loss to Southern Lehigh. This is big as far as Colonial League and District 11 points are concerned...Pen Argyl, 24-20.

EAST STROUDSBURG NORTH AT LEHIGHTON - Indians finally got the win they needed last week against Dieruff, but now it's back to the meat of the MVC...East Stroudsburg North, 24-7.

PLEASANT VALLEY AT POCONO MOUNTAIN EAST - Bears almost stunned Berks County power Wyomissing last week. This week, the Ol' Oaken Bucket is on the line...Pleasant Valley, 31-14.

POCONO MOUNTAIN WEST AT ALLEN - The Panthers take on the Canaries at J. Birney Crum Stadium and look for the Panthers to keep the MVC welcome rough for the Canaries...Pocono Mountain West, 21-12.

BANGOR AT CATASAUQUA - The Roughies got a little banged up last week, but with two unbeatens colliding for sole possession of first place in the Colonial League, it'll be tough to keep any of them on the bench. Still the class of the CL thus far, it's...Catasauqua, 21-7.

SOUTHERN LEHIGH AT NOTRE DAME (GP) - The Spartans finally got rid of their Disney hangover two weeks ago. The win streak continues...Southern Lehigh, 24-21.

PALISADES AT WILSON - The Pirates have already won more games than we thought they would this season...Palisades, 21-7.

SCHUYLKILL HAVEN AT SHENANDOAH VALLEY - At one point early in the season, my Schuylkill County spies told me that the Devils were the second best team in the AFL. The Hurricanes have put together a couple of big wins and now see the district playoffs in sight. Can they stop Shenandoah's passing game...Schuylkill Haven, 21-13.

EASTON AT FREEDOM - Rovers just seem to always find a way to win...Easton, 21-14.

NAZARETH AT PARKLAND - Take your calculator to add up the scores if you're going to take in this one. Both teams coming off big wins...Parkland, 28-22.

LIBERTY AT ALLENTOWN CENTRAL CATHOLIC - Two teams that are a bit down from what they've been in the past. Vikings racked up a big win against Northampton last week and could be ready to roll...Central Catholic, 28-18.
