A Berks County firm that owns 73 mobile home parks in the state, including one in West Penn Township, has been fined a total of $1,339,000 by the state Department of Environmental Resources (DEP) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), following a joint investigation by the two regulatory agencies.

GSP Management Co., of Morgantown, was ordered to make corrective measures at the parks it owns. One park is The Pines at West Penn, located south of SR895 between New Ringgold and Snyders.

According to DEP the firm must make changes to the drinking water and wastewater systems at its properties.

The investigation found violations over five consecutive years at 32 of the firm's mobile home parks in Pennsylvania.

The violations included, but not limited to, illegal discharge of partially treated or untreated sewage into streams, failure to operate and maintain wastewater treatment facilities properly, exceeding federal standards for certain pollutants in drinking water and not notifying park residents of those problems.

Concerning the West Penn site the violation there included both drinking water and wastewater.

The state Clean Streams Law and the federal Safe Drinking Water Act, were the two laws which were cited in the violations.

The fine money will be divided between the two agencies.
