Van strikes two homes

Major damage was caused to one home and mild damage to another following an accident that occurred Saturday afternoon in Palmerton.

Contacted this morning, borough police Chief Randy Smith told the TIMES NEWS the incident occurred at 5:51 p.m. when Cynthia Roberts, 60, of 564 Lehigh Avenue, was operating her Chevy Gladiator Van west on Alley A.Roberts then made a right onto Fifth Street, at which time the handicapped assist lever on her vehicle got stuck while she was making the turn, causing the vehicle to accelerate, lose control, and strike the house at 502 Lehigh Avenue, Smith said.The vehicle then drove over the sidewalk through the front yard of 510 and 510 1/2 Lehigh Avenue, at which time it hit the porch at 510 Lehigh Avenue, and then impacted the front of the home at 510 1/2 Lehigh Avenue, he said.Smith said there were no injuries, and added that the property at 502 is "moderate." However, the vehicle drove about 3-foot into the home at 510 1/2, he said.
