Elderly driver hits police car
ANDREW LEIBENGUTH/TIMES NEWS The Rush Township police car sustained moderate damage.
An elderly Tamaqua woman was injured when her vehicle hit the side of a police vehicle. State police at Frackville said the accident occurred about 12:56 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 21, along SR309 at Ye Old Dam Road, in Rush Township.
Troopers said Sgt. Duane Frederick, of the township police, was driving a 2011 Ford Crown Victoria police cruiser northbound while June Camerini, 81, of Tamaqua, driving a 1998 Toyota Camry, was attempting to pull out from Ye Old Dam Road onto 309.
The front of the Toyota struck the passenger side of the cruiser, which caused it to spin around and come to rest facing south in the southbound lane. After impact, the Toyota continued west and traveled into a ditch on the west side of 309.
Camerini was flown by PennStar helicopter to St. Luke's Hospital, Fountain Hill, for observation, troopers said. Frederick was not injured.
Troopers were assisted at the scene by volunteers from Hometown and Tamaqua fire companies, and Tamaqua ambulance.
Troopers said Camerini will be cited for causing the crash.
