Woman, five children injured in Lansford

A young Coaldale woman and five children were injured, two seriously, in a crash Thursday evening along the 800 block of East Patterson Street (SR209) in Lansford. Police report that Laura DeMaio, 29, was operating a van eastbound and apparently had a medical problem - possibly a seizure. Her van struck at least three parked vehicles along the east curb of the street. DeMaio and her 10-year-old son, who was seated in the front passenger seat, were flown to the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township, for treatment of injuries. The four other children in the vehicle were taken either by ambulance or private car to the Lehighton hospital. The van first hit a sport utility vehicle (SUV), bounced off that and then struck a car pushing it into a home. The van then struck a second car and came to rest. The van and two cars were demolished, according to police, while the SUV had moderate damage. No one else was injured in the accident. Patterson Street was closed for several hours until the wreckage was cleared and police conducted their investigation.
