Monroe man being sought for assault
A Monroe County man is being sought for assault on a state trooper and numerous other charges following an incident that occurred on Friday, Nov. 2.
State police at Lehighton are seeking the whereabouts of Robert Paul Smith III, 21, last known address of 617 Kunkletown Road, of Kunkletown, Polk Township.
Troopers said the incident occurred about 9 p.m. when a patrol unit attempted to stop Smith for several vehicle code violations, including speeding, going 107 miles-per-hour in a 55 zone, and driving on roadways laned for traffic.
The stop was attempted along SR534 westbound near Merriwell Lane, in Polk Township.
Smith failed to stop and a pursuit began westbound on 534. Smith then made a right turn onto Merriwell Lane and traveled to a dead end and cul-de-sac.
At this point Smith appeared to stop but made a quick and abrupt U-turn. He then sped toward a marked state police unit striking the passenger side of the cruiser which caused it to spin counter-clockwise, and causing disabling damage. The airbags were deployed and Trooper Michael E. Pahira Jr., 30, sustained minor injuries. Smith then fled the scene eastbound on 534.
An arrest warrant has been issued for Smith, charging him with felony counts, two for aggravated assault, and one for fleeing and eluding.
He is also facing a felony count of institutional vandalism, criminal mischief, two counts each of simple assault and recklessly endangering, summary counts of driving while operating privilege is suspended or revoked-DUI related, maximum speed limits, driving a vehicle at an (un) safe speed, driving on roadways laned for traffic, careless driving, reckless driving, and turning movements and required signals.
Anyone with information on Smith's whereabouts is asked to call the barracks at (610) 377-4270.
