Salute to Carbon County Veterans Expo planned for July 1
Striving to reach out to as many Carbon County veterans as possible, Rep. Doyle Heffley (R-Carbon), in conjunction with local veterans' organizations, encourages all veterans and their families to participate in his first "Salute to Carbon County Veterans Expo" slated for Sunday, July 1, from 1 to 5 p.m., at the Jim Thorpe High School auditorium.
"It is said that nobody prays more for peace than the servicemen and women who go to war, because nobody knows better about the sacrifices that may be required. Yet knowing that, they willingly put on the uniform of the United States military and went forth to defend and protect the rest of us and our freedom here at home," said Heffley. "And for that, it's my hope to honor these courageous men and women at this special event being held in their hometown."
The expo will honor all veterans, with a special service being held for Global War on Terrorism veterans and present day active military men and women who either serve or have served in the Gulf War, Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom or Operation New Dawn.
Heffley urges these veterans to submit an application in order to be honored at the event with a medallion and certificate. Applications will be available at Heffley's district offices, as well as the Carbon County Veterans Affairs office, and are due by June 1.
Heffley's district offices are located at 110 N. Third St., 2nd floor, in Lehighton and 2681 State Route 903, Unit 3, in Albrightsville. His satellite office, open every Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., is located in the basement of the American Legion Post 123, 3 W. Ridge St., in Lansford.
"Too often, veterans return home to Carbon County without knowing what types of resources and agencies are available to help ease their transition into civilian lifestyles," said Heffley. "This expo will both commemorate their service and provide our veterans with access to available services."
