Elderly warned of lottery scam

Published May 25. 2012 05:01PM

State police at Frackville are alerting area residents, especially the elderly, of a lottery scam apparently being conducted in the Schuylkill County area.

Troopers said they received information from a Mahanoy City area senior citizen that she received several phone calls and correspondence directing her to wire a sum of money to secure a lottery prize she had one.

In this instance the woman was alert and did not transmit any money.

Troopers said these scams are usually perpetrated upon senior citizens. Troopers said it is recommended that if anyone should receive such calls or correspondence to report it to their local police or area state police barracks.

Troopers said in these types of scams, once the money is sent, and usually to an off-shore location, the money can never be recovered.

No legitimate lottery is known to ask for a security deposit to secure the winnings, troopers added.
