Large fuel leak in Schuylkill crash
A large amount of diesel fuel leaked from one of two vehicles involved in a crash on Wednesday, May 9, at the intersection of SR901 and Interstate 81, in Foster Township, Schuylkill County.
State police at Schuylkill Haven said Justin McRae, 34, of Sunbury, Northumberland County, was driving a 2004 Hyundai Sonata eastbound on 901 about 10:35 p.m. while Darren Southerland, 45, of Duncan, Okla., was stopped at the top of the off-ramp to I81 northbound driving a 2007 Volvo conventional truck and trailer.
Southerland did not see the Sonata and began to make a left turn. As he turned to go westbound on 901 the Sonata impacted with the fuel tank of the Volvo. Upon impact the Sonata spun 90-degrees counter-clockwise and came to rest along the south berm. The tractor trailer rig came to rest arcoss both lanes of travel.
The diesel fuel from the tank leaked onto the road. As a result 901 and the off-ramp from the interstate were closed for about four hours until the area was cleaned up.
McRae and his passenger, Christopher Clayberger, 39, of Northumberland, were taken to the Schuylkill Medical Center-E. Norwegian St., Pottsville, for treatment of minor injuries, troopers said. Southerland was not injured.
Damages were termed heavy to the Sonata and moderate to the Volvo.
Troopers also reported investigating a one vehicle crash about 7 a.m. on Wednesday along Pheasant Run Road, in West Brunswick Township. Troopers said Denise D. Smith, 40, of Mount Carmel, was operating a 2002 Ford Explorer negotiating a curve when the vehicle began to fishtail. The rear of the vehicle spun clockwise onto berm where it struck a tree. Smith was not injured. The vehicle had to be towed from the scene.
