Sorority news

Members of the Preceptor Alpha Upsilon Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority attended a Founder's Day Dinner on April 25 at the Pottsville Club. Also attending the dinner were sorority chapters from Pottsville, Reading and Tamaqua.

Lori Schmerfeld was honored as "Girl of the Year" and perfect attendance awards were presented. Donna Gerber was presented the Program of the Year Award for her Mardi Gras-themed meeting.

The next regular meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m., May 9, at the home of Sue Hummel

Senior citizens

The Tamaqua Seniors met May 3 at the Tamaqua Community Center with 84 members in attendance. One new member, Norma Lee Baker, was welcomed.

President Jean Machamer conducted the business session and provided an inspirational reading. Rose Vallee provided the invocation, entitled "He Who Feeds the Sparrow." Vice President Nancy Gerber and secretary Joan Anne Garber provided their reports.

April and May birthdays will be celebrated at the next meeting and a trip to Knoebel's Grove is being planned for June.

The meeting concluded with cards and social games.

The group meets every Thursday at 1 p.m., at the community center. Anyone 55 or older is welcome to join. The center is handicap accessible.

St. Peter's Union

The Rev. Cheryl Moore will officiate at the 9 a.m. worship service this Sunday in St. Peter's Union Church, Mantzville. Sunday school classes meet at 10:15 a.m. and Confirmation class meets at 11:30 a.m.

Also on Sunday, Daisies and Brownies will meet at 6 p.m.

Activities for next week will include: Monday, food co-op meets at 9 a.m.; Tuesday, Mother-Daughter Tea will be served at 6:30 p.m.; Thursday, prayer group meets at 4:45 p.m.

The choirs rehearse on Thursdays. Next week's schedule will include: cherubs at 6:30 p.m., junior choir at 7 p.m., senior choir at 7:30 p.m.

SS. Peter and Paul

First Holy Communion was celebrated during the 10:30 a.m. Mass this Sunday in SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. First Communicants included Ethan Amershek, Sophia Boyle, Jocelyn Clause, Anthony Coccio, Abbey Delpais, Haley Delpais, Callista Fannock, Nathan Gregoire, Makenna Kane, Emily Lawson, Megan Lawson, Adam Linkhorst, Nathaniel Linkhorst, Zachary McGlinchey, Austin Messerschmidt, Stephen Modesto, Maria Onea, Makenna Renn, Megan Rolko, Annika Stahler, Dominic Stegmerten, Grace Stegmerten, Michael Steigerwalt, Randolph Steigerwalt, Jillian Tite, Maura Walker, Alexus Warne and Amanda Wunderlich.

The parish Holy Name Society will meet this Thursday at 8 p.m. The meeting will be preceded by a Mass, scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
