No tax increase for 2012-2013 in Jim Thorpe school budget

Published May 09. 2012 05:02PM

The Jim Thorpe Area School Board approved the 2012-2013 proposed final budget at 44.52 Mills, with no millage increase. For the 2012-2013 school year the district will see no tax increase.

The school approved the proposed final budget. The budget will be on public display for 30 days and voted on again for final approval. The proposed budget has been passed and it cannot be changed. However, the board needs to have a final vote before the budget is submitted to the Pennsylvania Department of Education.

John Partenio, a school board director stated that for next school year there will be no tax increase, no loss of positions, and no loss of programs.

"We appreciate the contributions everyone put forth (regarding the budget)," he added.

In other news, Patty Baresse of Nutrition Inc. discussed with the board the changes to the National School Lunch Program.

Five components are served for lunch. They are: milk, fruit, vegetable, grain, and protein. For students to get a reimbursable lunch (paid lunch price, reduced price, or free lunch) the students need at least three of the five components. Currently the three components can be milk, grain, and protein.

Next year, the National School Lunch Guidelines are changing and for students to receive a reimbursable meal they will have to at least have one serving of fruit or vegetable for their three components.

With the new regulations the high school levels will have to offer a full cup of vegetables and full cup of fruit as opposed to the half cups served currently. The cost for the extra food will cost around $38,000.

The board approved the following changes in cafeteria prices: 15-cent increase for lunch, 25-cent increase for breakfast, and 3 percent increase in a la carte.

The board also approved to reduce the 2012-2013 substitute rate $10 per day ($100 to $90 per day).

In other news, Superintendent Barbara Conway was recognized by the school board for obtaining her doctorate. Dr. Conway received an Ed.D. in School Leadership in Kindergarten through 12th grade from Wilkes University.
