A Lehigh County truck driver died when his rig crashed along a Schuylkill County roadway on Monday morning. State police at Frackville said the crash occurred about 8:35 a.m. at the intersection of state routes 924 and 339 in East Union Township.

Troopers said Humberto Antonio Mendieta, 70, of Whitehall, was operating a 2000 Freightliner truck tractor with trailer northbound when he lost control while rounding a left curve in the road.

The rig rolled onto its roof and came to rest on the east berm, near the Brandonville Fire Company. Mendieta was trapped inside the rig for about two and a half hours, troopers said, until being extradited by rescue personnel. He was pronounded dead at the scene at 9:30 a.m. by county deputy coroner David Truskowsky, of Mahanoy City.

The rig was loaded with concrete water pipes. He was reportedly traveling from Phillipsburg, N.J., to a site in Girardville.

The roadway was closed for an extended period of time until Mendieta was freed and the wreckage was cleared.
