An elderly Monroe County man was struck by a car and killed as he was at his mailbox retrieving his mail.

State police at Fern Ridge said the incident occurred about 5:11 p.m. on Wednesday along SR115 at Log Cabin Lane, in Chestnuthill Township.

Troopers said Walter A. Machalick, 85, of Effort, was retrieving his mail in front of his residence when a 2004 Subaru Outback, operated by James York Jr., 50, of Effort, left the left travel lane and struck the victim.

Machalick was thrown more than 100 feet and came to rest in a ditch in front of his property. The Subaru struck the same ditch and rolled over multiple times before coming to rest in the front yard of the Machalick property.

York managed to crawl out of his vehicle and was treated at the scene by West End ambulance personnel. He was later flown by Medevac helicopter to the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township.

Family members of Machalick ran to his aid and attempted CPR as did West End personnel. He was pronounced dead at the scene by county coroner Bob Allen. Troopers said it is believed that Machalick died on impact.

Charges are pending completion of the investigation, troopers added.
